Gladys Paulus Felt

Occasionally you come across a gem this is one of them …

Gladys Paulus is a member of the International Feltmakers Association, Somerset Art Works and Frome Creative Network. She has been living and working in the UK since 1995 and currently lives in Frome, Somerset.

This is what she says about her work …

I made my first piece of felt in 2005 and fell in love with the simple, humble materials and the physicality of the feltmaking process.

A frequent starting point for my work is the natural world, but I also have a deep fascination with traditional costume, ritual and theatricality which must have its roots in the images and artefacts that were part of a childhood in a multi-cultural household.

Horned

Born and raised in the Netherlands, Gladys started out life with a love of drawing and painting. During her years at Art College she dabbled with performance arts and later developed an interest in the visual impact and possibilities of theatrical costume and the ritualistic & cultural significance of traditional dress the world over.

Through her paternal grandparents she was introduced to the magical and highly symbolic world of Indonesian puppetry, dance and imagery. With her other foot firmly embedded in Dutch pragmatism, practicality and Northern European folklore, feltmaking has enabled her to start bringing together these influences into a language of her own.

A self-taught feltmaker initially, she has in recent years been fortunate to learn from Fabienne Dorsman-Rey (the Netherlands), Judit Pócs (Hungary), Vilte Kazlauskaite (Lithuania), Chris Lines (UK), Sheila Smith (UK), Ruth Walker (USA) and Pam de Groot (Australia).
