The countryside of Groningen

Yesterday Jan and I made a tour in the countryside of Groningen, that’s the province north of Friesland in The Netherlands, beautiful skies, many grassland birds, beautiful art and a small but nice Spring sun …

We started at museum Het Kunstpaviljoen, an exhibition space in a home environment where architecture, interior and nature coincide. The museum is the life work of Jannie Tonnis de Graaf en her husband Job Kuiper, the museum is also their home.

The permanent collection includes the work of: Arjan van Arendonk, Maarten Baas, Maarten Baptist, Jurgen Bey, Piet Hein Eek, Mieke Groot, Studio Job, Joris Laarman, Richard Meitner, Meesters en van der Park, Frederik Roijé, Piet Stockmans, Rob Scholte, Cornelie Tollens, Auke de Vries, Mary Waters en Anne Wenzel. A large part of the collection is on permanent display.

Then on to Museum De Buitenplaats a museum in Eelde for figurative art. It was obviously a bit too early for the beautiful garden but the sculptures in it were very nice.

Together with the dogs we hiked along the river Reitdiep

and to end a fine day we eat oysters and drank white wine on the terrace of restaurant ‘t Oestertje in Oldehove.

As you can tell from the picture this tiny restaurant sits on a somewhat unexpected location in a small and very old village, it does not even own a website but you will be warmly received and the platters of shellfish we ate that evening were delicious!
